The lower jaw of the saber-toothed cat, Smilodon californicus, was broadly hinged to enable the cat to get the jaw out of the way of the thrusting canine teeth. The nostrils are relatively far back, presumably to let the animal breathe while its head was plunged deeply into its victim.
