One of the more numerous specimen types at Rancho La Brea is the dire wolf, Canis dirus. This animal was very wide-spread in North America in the Pleistocene, and is about 8% smaller than the largest modern southern timber wolves. This wolf had a large head, relatively small brain, and very strong jaws and teeth.
