Ammonoids and nautiloids expand their living area by adding an additional, larger cavity to the shell. The animal lives only in the outermost cavity. The inner cavities are connected by a tube, and gas can be pumped into or out of the cavities for buoyancy control. In fossilization, these cavities are often filled with secondary minerals.
